While deciding on what aspect of my project I wanted to do I had to think about the type of questions which I would ask concerning mental illness. I want to question on why do individuals do it, is it due to them being depressed, bullying, being different or something which is more in depth that the individual is suffering with, I want to be able to grasp the idea of what a mentally ill person is going through. Through this project there are many ideas which are going to explored, ideas which I'm going to be exploring are photographers and the ideas which they come up with and the way that they portray mental illness and the way it effects people and see if a picture can speak a thousand words.
I feel exploring photographers who have had years of experience is a great way to start this process of my project, but not only professional photographers but individuals such as Christian Hopkins he has never taken a photography class before in his life and yet produced some amazing and beautiful images. What makes me so interested in Hopkins images are in fact that he battled with major depression for the past four years and much of this work are a reflection of the dark thoughts and feelings which were swirling around his mind.
